About the position

The Swim Team Coach at Duncan YMCA is responsible for providing leadership, instruction, and motivation to participants in a competitive swim environment. The role emphasizes creating a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety, youth development, and healthy living in accordance with YMCA standards. The coach will assist in developing swimming skills, coordinating swim competitions, and maintaining accurate records of attendance and progress.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and instruction for participants in a competitive swim environment.
  • Create a safe and positive atmosphere promoting member safety and engagement.
  • Teach competitive swimming skills through stroke development.
  • Assist the swim coach in creating and leading age-appropriate workouts.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance and progress.
  • Perform daily equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment availability.
  • Assist in coordinating and executing swim competitions and meet registrations.
  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Provide guidance for volunteers and parents through effective communication.
  • Report suspicious behaviors and policy violations.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18 years and at least 5 years older than the oldest youth participant.
  • Minimum 2 years of competitive swim experience preferred.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Swim Instructor skills according to YMCA standards.
  • Current or must obtain American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches before the first practice.
  • Current or must obtain YMCA certifications such as YMCA Aquatic Safety Assistant or YMCA Life Guard before the first practice.
  • Current or must obtain ASHI certification for CPR, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen before the first practice.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups from all social and economic segments.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in teaching swimming or coaching.
  • Additional certifications in aquatics or safety training.
