About the position

The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is seeking a dedicated and passionate Visual Art Teacher for PreK through 8th grade for the school year 2024-2025. Under the supervision of the school principal, the teacher will be responsible for the instruction, progress, and discipline of all pupils in assigned classes. This role involves a comprehensive approach to instructional planning, which includes the development of written lesson plans that align with the objectives of the instructional program. The teacher will establish positive learning expectations for all students and evaluate their progress while maintaining accurate records of their achievements. In this position, the teacher will implement various instructional methods, drawing from a wide range of contemporary learning theories and teaching methodologies. The teacher will also participate in the development and implementation of innovative teaching techniques and create engaging bulletin boards and interest areas that reflect the students' current work. A key responsibility will be to promote student attendance and engage in anti-vandalism programs within the school. The teacher will maintain reasonable rules of conduct in the classroom and on school grounds, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all students. The teacher will also be expected to communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding their child's academic progress, attendance, and conduct. Participation in professional development meetings and in-service training is essential to stay updated with the latest educational practices. The role may also involve coordinating class field trips and participating in extracurricular and after-school activities, utilizing community resources to enhance the educational experience for students.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for instructional planning, including providing written lesson plans and preparation in accordance with the objectives of the instructional program.
  • Establish positive learning expectation standards for all pupils and evaluate pupils' progress while maintaining accurate records of achievements.
  • Implement instructional methods based on contemporary principles of learning theory and teaching methodology.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of new teaching techniques and create bulletin boards reflective of pupils' current work.
  • Promote student attendance and engage in anti-vandalism programs in the schools.
  • Establish and maintain reasonable rules of conduct within the classroom and on school grounds.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and seating charts.
  • Encourage student growth in self-discipline and positive self-concept.
  • Communicate with parents or guardians regarding academic progress, attendance, and conduct.
  • Participate in in-service meetings and professional staff meetings.
  • Coordinate and attend class field trips and participate in extracurricular and after-school activities.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of all student teaching requirements and coursework to obtain the appropriate teaching certificate(s) issued by the Illinois State Board of Education.
  • Possession of a valid Professional Educator License (PEL) or Educator License with Stipulations (ELS), properly endorsed for this position.
  • Knowledge of subject matter consistent with state certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of contemporary principles and practices of teaching and classroom management techniques.
  • Ability to modify instruction to meet student needs and cooperate with school faculty and administration.
  • Ability to work effectively with pupils, parents, guardians, staff members, and community representatives.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in teaching visual arts at the PreK-8 level.
