About the position

The Special Education General Curriculum Classroom Teacher at Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools is responsible for providing appropriate learning experiences and educational opportunities tailored to each student assigned to their class. This role requires a commitment to fostering educational excellence and ensuring that all students, particularly those with special needs, receive the support they need to succeed academically and socially. The teacher will engage in various instructional tasks, including teaching at an appropriate instructional level, developing content, and promoting student engagement. They will also assess and encourage student progress, monitor their development, and respond to both adequate and inadequate progress with appropriate support strategies. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the teacher will manage the learning environment effectively, ensuring that time is used efficiently and that the physical setting is conducive to learning. Maintaining appropriate student behavior is also a critical aspect of this role. The teacher will be expected to communicate effectively with all stakeholders, including students, parents, and colleagues, particularly in a virtual learning environment. This includes using various software applications for instructional and administrative tasks and participating in professional learning to enhance their ability to provide engaging online instruction. The teacher will also be responsible for following professional practices consistent with school and district policies, maintaining confidentiality, and facilitating home-school communication. They will conduct classes as scheduled, enforce regulations concerning student conduct, and maintain accurate records and files. The role requires a commitment to professional development, including modeling correct language use, demonstrating up-to-date knowledge of content, and implementing the designated curriculum. The teacher will also supervise students in out-of-class settings and coordinate assignments for paraprofessionals and other support staff as needed. Overall, this position is vital in ensuring that students with special needs receive a high-quality education in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Georgia Teaching Certificate in Special Education General Curriculum.
  • Preferred: Advanced degree(s).
