About the position

The AJA seeks an experienced, forward thinking, and collaborative archivist to join our professional staff. This individual will be responsible for the processing and digitizing of the Syms collection of the AJA as well as its ongoing maintenance. The candidate will also serve as coordinator for other digital collections of the AJA and will help implement policies and procedures for managing born digital and digital archives at the AJA. Reporting to the Associate Director and serving as a senior staff member, the Syms Archivist & Digital Specialist will also be asked to perform general archival duties, including the arrangement and description of manuscript materials, preparing finding aids, cataloging collections using archival standards, digitization of specific documents and collections, overseeing support staff, and providing reference support when needed.

Responsibilities

  • Processing and digitizing the Syms collection of the AJA.
  • Coordinating other digital collections of the AJA.
  • Implementing policies and procedures for managing born digital and digital archives.
  • Arranging and describing manuscript materials.
  • Preparing finding aids.
  • Cataloging collections using archival standards.
  • Digitizing specific documents and collections.
  • Overseeing support staff.
  • Providing reference support when needed.

Requirements

  • ALA accredited MLIS degree with graduate level course work in archival management.
  • At least 8+ years experience as a professional archivist.
  • Knowledge and experience with relevant standards for archival description and preservation, including DACS and EAD.
  • Experience managing large digital projects.
  • Knowledge of American History/American Jewish History is preferred.
  • Experience working in a team setting and managing employees.
  • Knowledge of born digital and digitization best practices.
  • Ability to complete tasks and meet deadlines and goals.
  • Good communication skills, well organized, adaptable, and can work collaboratively and take initiative.
  • Ability to lift and move 40-pound boxes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with archival information management systems (i.e. ArchivEra).
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud applications.
  • Experience with Microsoft applications including Word and Excel.
