About the position

The System Administrator II, Virtualization is a professional role focused on managing virtual server and desktop environments. This position involves technical activities such as designing, implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting virtualization systems. The role may include limited project leadership responsibilities and requires expertise in assigned systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform planning, installation, configuration, operation, development, modification, maintenance, and repair of virtualized systems, software, and applications.
  • Install and configure physical servers, including operating systems and software applications.
  • Design, build, operate, and maintain virtualization infrastructure according to the College's needs and best practices.
  • Document solutions and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for effective service delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, rules, and regulations according to College practices.
  • Analyze performance, scalability, and availability of resources to minimize service interruptions.
  • Develop strategies for performance tuning of virtualization systems.
  • Perform Tier 3 troubleshooting and serve as an escalation point for unresolved issues.
  • Schedule system downtime with end users and technical staff for hardware and software changes.
  • Understand and document technical requirements for new services or enhancements.
  • Advise on technological decisions and provide service implementation estimates.
  • Support overall operations of assigned environments to meet requirements and performance goals.
  • Identify reusable service components or standard products to leverage for solutions.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to ensure implementation meets design requirements.
  • Foster a safe environment of respect and inclusion for all community members.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalency.
  • At least three (3) years of progressively responsible technical experience managing virtualization infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of server and desktop virtualization using VMware vSphere, VMware Horizon, and Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Experience with enterprise SAN systems and networking as it relates to virtualization.
  • Familiarity with Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery, server and desktop operating systems, and system monitoring.

  • Experience with server hardware monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to think creatively and simplify complex situations.
  • Experience in maintaining confidential and sensitive information.
