About the position

The System Administrator is responsible for managing and optimizing in-house computer software systems and network connections to ensure high availability and security of business applications. This role involves planning and implementing policies and procedures that align with the City's goals and regulatory requirements, while also participating in strategic planning and operational management of IT systems.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and tune in-house computer software systems and network connections.
  • Formulate and deploy long-term strategic plans for information processing and communication technologies.
  • Participate in capacity planning and development of long-term strategic goals for systems and software.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures for system administration and project management.
  • Collaborate with IT management to align work with the City's IT Strategy.
  • Evaluate and recommend hardware and software for projects.
  • Communicate with vendors to identify and recommend products and services.
  • Coordinate with network engineering and database administration to implement systems that meet corporate objectives.
  • Deploy servers, storage arrays, backup protection, and security systems.
  • Manage server and desktop operating systems and monitor system performance.
  • Ensure integrity and security of enterprise data and manage end-user accounts and permissions.
  • Perform system and security audits and routine backups.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software problems on servers and workstations.
  • Conduct research on emerging products and services in support of systems software procurement.
  • Create reports in response to business user needs and participate in vendor negotiations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology or closely related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years related work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working technical knowledge of network, PC, and platform operating systems, including Windows Server OS and VMware ESXi.
  • Extensive application support experience with VMware Horizon VDI and ESRI ArcGIS.
  • Strong knowledge of local area network administration and hands-on troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience with data management and documentation of configuration and processes.
  • Good understanding of the organization's goals and objectives and applicable data privacy practices.
