About the position

The System Administrator position at Barksdale AFB, LA, involves providing critical support to the Standoff Munitions Application Center (SMAC) for the Joint Forces Air Component Commander (JFACC). The primary goal is to optimize the efficiency and combat effectiveness of Low-Density/High-Demand (LD/HD) global strike and theater standoff munitions. This role requires a proactive approach to maintaining and enhancing communication systems, ensuring seamless access to both classified and unclassified networks. The System Administrator will be responsible for installing and maintaining various communications units, managing inventories of communications equipment, and providing on-site repairs as necessary. This includes tracking the completion of communications-related projects and delivering client services to both government and customer personnel. In addition to equipment maintenance, the System Administrator will troubleshoot and repair network systems, including voice, data, and video networks, such as VOIP telephones and video teleconferencing (VTC) systems. The role requires establishing priorities for maintenance, testing, and repairs of network systems and circuits, utilizing diagnostic software and specialized test equipment to isolate malfunctions. The System Administrator will monitor system performance, coordinate with external units and agencies to analyze performance faults, and implement corrective actions. Preventative maintenance is also a key responsibility, ensuring that equipment is serviceable and operational. The position demands a thorough understanding of complex hardware and software systems, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve both physical and logical processing problems. The System Administrator will be expected to provide proactive consultation and instruction to system users, ensuring that changes are implemented seamlessly and with minimal disruption to business functions. This role also involves testing and evaluating current and proposed equipment and software enhancements, advising management on acquisition proposals, and developing standard procedures for system maintenance and recovery. Additionally, the System Administrator will manage the overall SMAC Information Assurance (IA) program, ensuring compliance with Communications Security (COMSEC), Emissions Security (EMSEC), and Computer Security (COMPUSEC) protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Install and maintain communications units to ensure unbroken access to classified and unclassified Internet Protocol and telephone networks.
  • Maintain inventories of all communications equipment, providing on-site repair and tracking completion of communications-related projects.
  • Remove, repair, and replace assemblies and subassemblies to sustain voice, data, and video networks, including VOIP telephones and VTC systems.
  • Establish priorities, maintain, test, troubleshoot, and repair network systems equipment and circuits using diagnostic software and specialized test equipment.
  • Monitor performance of systems and circuits, coordinating with outside units and agencies to analyze and isolate performance faults.
  • Check equipment for serviceability and perform preventative maintenance, isolating faults by coordinating with service providers.
  • Troubleshoot and analyze unusual or complex hardware and software malfunctions to resolve processing problems.
  • Survey system operation to identify potential problems that could lead to service interruptions.
  • Identify corrective or preventative procedures and take actions to rectify immediate problems and prevent future occurrences.
  • Perform testing, troubleshooting, and correction of complex problems involving system components and software applications.
  • Ensure maintenance and upgrade procedures minimize disruption to normal business functions.
  • Provide consultation and instruction to system users for seamless implementation of changes.
  • Coordinate with IT specialists and management to identify and correct unusual problems, providing innovative solutions.
  • Test and evaluate current and proposed equipment and software enhancements, advising management on acquisition proposals.
  • Analyze complex processes and unusual problems related to management information systems and applications software technology.
  • Assess vendor-developed software to ensure it meets defined requirements.
  • Develop standard procedures for account establishment, system maintenance, and recovery.
  • Administer and manage the overall SMAC IA program, ensuring compliance with security protocols.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Technology, Engineering, or Computer-Information Systems related field and five (5) years of relevant experience in the Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) 3D1X /3D0X, Cyber Transport Systems, or an equivalent field. Education requirement can be waived with more than ten years of experience.
  • Five (5) years of relevant experience analyzing, explaining, and implementing new technology; evaluating impacts on organization missions; developing strategies; and offering alternative approaches in operating systems development.
  • Two (2) years of demonstrated relevant experience using a high-level programming language, primarily LINUX.
  • Working knowledge of and/or one year experience developing or coding in LINUX, JAVA, C, C++ or similar environment as primary duty.
  • Must possess and maintain CompTIA Security + certification.
  • Must have Information Assurance Technical (IAT) Level II certification pursuant to DODI 8570.01 at time of commencement of work and maintain throughout employment.
  • Demonstrated experience with systems integration methods, performance tuning methods, test and evaluation methods, IT security principles, and project management principles sufficient to plan and coordinate installations.
  • Experience with installing, maintaining, and modifying computer and network systems, providing advice on new system needs based on mission requirements.
  • Experience with maintaining, troubleshooting, and configuring Network Appliances, Servers, and Virtual Desktops.
