The System Administrator at the Missouri Botanical Garden is responsible for managing the Garden's computer and operating systems, ensuring their day-to-day maintenance and security. This role encompasses a variety of tasks including the management of large-scale operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, Linux, and VMWare. The System Administrator must ensure that these systems work cohesively to support the business requirements of end-users and function optimally. This includes analyzing system workloads, managing user accounts, and developing security procedures to protect against physical harm, malware, cyber breaches, and unauthorized access to data. In addition to system management, the System Administrator is tasked with performing daily system monitoring to verify the integrity and availability of hardware and server resources. This involves reviewing system logs, ensuring the completion of scheduled jobs like backups, and documenting system standards and procedures. The role also requires the handling of highly confidential information, ensuring that such data is safeguarded from unauthorized access. The System Administrator will administer various servers, including application, database, web, and file servers, and will be responsible for ongoing system patches and upgrades. The position requires effective communication with software and hardware vendors to resolve issues and may involve light programming tasks, primarily shell scripting, to automate processes. Regular reporting of activities to the Supervisor is expected, along with adherence to established policies and procedures. The System Administrator must demonstrate core competencies in communication, collaboration, accountability, problem-solving, and stewardship, fostering a culture of teamwork and respect within the organization.
