The Systems Application Engineer-Mechanical at FORTNA plays a crucial role in the design and costing of material handling systems. This position is responsible for generating costs based on AutoCAD layouts and equipment lists, ensuring that the overall system design is functional and meets customer requirements. The engineer will utilize existing costing tools to estimate mechanical equipment costs for new systems, modifications, and change orders. Collaboration with internal departments is essential to accurately estimate costs related to mechanical and controls engineering, installation, project management, and other project-related expenses such as freight and permits. In addition to cost estimation, the engineer will evaluate customer Request for Quote (RFQ) documents to ensure that all requirements and specifications are included in the costing. They will generate RFQ documentation for external suppliers and create proposal documentation using Microsoft Word and Excel. Analyzing system costing in comparison to previous estimates and presenting findings to executive management is also a key responsibility. The engineer will lead customer design review meetings and executive-level meetings to discuss project scope and costing. To succeed in this role, the engineer must develop and maintain a working knowledge of customer specifications and various conveyor components, such as drives, belting, and sorters. They will also analyze system layouts and flow rates to ensure proper operation of the systems. This position requires a detail-oriented individual who can manage multiple tasks and changing priorities while maintaining excellent records and documentation throughout the proposal process.
