The Systems Engineer Co-op position is designed for students who are eager to gain hands-on experience in the engineering field while working alongside an experienced project team. This role will provide the opportunity to engage in various aspects of systems engineering, including instrumentation and electrical design, system design and configuration, and onsite system startup. The co-op will be involved in real-world projects, where individual responsibilities will be assigned by the lead engineer based on the specific requirements of each project and the capabilities of the co-op. This position is ideal for students who are passionate about problem-solving and are looking to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting. In the instrumentation and electrical design phase, the co-op will spend approximately 40% of their time creating instrument lists by examining P&ID drawings, compiling submittal and procurement documentation for controls and instrument hardware, providing technical support for panel fabrication technicians, and inspecting completed control enclosures. This hands-on experience will allow the co-op to understand the intricacies of electrical design and the importance of accurate documentation in engineering projects. The system design and configuration phase will account for about 30% of the co-op's responsibilities. During this time, the co-op will participate in customer design review meetings, assemble development systems using project hardware and computers, configure user interfaces and HMI screens, and draft system documentation from templates. Additionally, the co-op will assist in customer demonstrations and acceptance testing, gaining valuable insights into client interactions and project validation processes. Finally, the onsite system startup phase will also comprise 30% of the co-op's role. In this capacity, the co-op will work in a supervised role at customer sites, installing project software and configurations onto site systems, participating in point-to-point loop checks, performing instrumentation and software calibration and tuning, and troubleshooting installation discrepancies. The co-op will also assist in developing commissioning test plans and documentation updates, as well as training documentation and presentations on the operations and maintenance of the system. This comprehensive exposure will equip the co-op with practical skills and knowledge essential for a successful career in engineering.
