About the position

The Systems Engineering Simulator Electrical/Hardware Engineer will collaborate with spacecraft simulation lab engineers on various projects, supporting the design, analysis, and manufacturing of new equipment. This role involves providing design support for hardware and electronics system development, developing test stand architectures, and troubleshooting electronic components. The engineer will work in a laboratory environment, ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures while performing physical duties related to the assembly and maintenance of simulation systems.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with spacecraft simulation lab engineers on multiple projects.
  • Support new equipment designs from conception to operational test and deployment.
  • Provide design support and guidance in Hardware/Electronics System Development.
  • Develop component test stand architectures for various components.
  • Design and generate electrical components and lab instrumentation system designs.
  • Perform electrical evaluation/selection of instrumentation for different mockups and facilities.
  • Troubleshoot and repair existing systems and electronic components down to the board level.
  • Conduct analog and digital printed circuit board design for various application needs.
  • Work with eCAD to develop printed circuit board designs.
  • Perform cable runs using asbestos Class III Maintenance and Operations procedures within JSC buildings.
  • Design and fabricate parts in the SES fabrication shop.
  • Assist with assembly of large human-in-the-loop mockups and other lab and facility construction.
  • Perform other physical duties as required.

Requirements

  • Experience with electrical schematic entry and printed circuit board layout tools such as Altium Designer.
  • Experience with microcontroller circuitry design and associated embedded software development environments.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or Pro-E or other drawing tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with data interface protocols such as Ethernet, RS232, RS422, RS485, I2C, SPI.
  • Experience with test hardware such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, logic analyzers, function generators, electronic load banks, power supplies, power analyzers.
  • Experience with FPGA circuitry design and coding in VHDL development environments.
  • Experience with cable design.
  • Experience in design and test of analog instrumentation systems.
  • Proficient in MS Office programs, particularly MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
