About the position

The Systems Engineering Simulator Electrical/Hardware Engineer will work collaboratively with a diverse team to support NASA's deep space exploration initiatives. This role involves designing, developing, and testing electrical components and systems for spacecraft simulation labs, ensuring operational readiness and functionality of various hardware systems.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with other spacecraft simulation lab engineers on multiple projects in the facility.
  • Support new equipment designs from conception, analysis, and manufacturing, through to operational test and deployment.
  • Provide design support and guidance in various aspects of Hardware/Electronics System Development.
  • Develop component test stand architectures for various components.
  • Design and generate electrical components and lab instrumentation system designs.
  • Perform electrical evaluation/selection of instrumentation for different mockups and facilities in the SES.
  • Troubleshoot and repair existing systems and electronic components down to the board level.
  • Conduct analog and digital printed circuit board design for various application needs.
  • Work with eCAD to develop printed circuit board designs.
  • Perform cable runs using asbestos Class III Maintenance and Operations procedures within JSC buildings.
  • Design and fabricate parts in the SES fabrication shop.
  • Assist with assembly of large human-in-the-loop mockups and other lab and facility construction.
  • Perform other physical duties as required.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering with experience in the field or in a related area.
  • Experience with electrical schematic entry and printed circuit board layout tools such as Altium Designer.
  • Experience with microcontroller circuitry design and associated embedded software development environments.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or Pro-E or some other drawing tool.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with data interface protocols and associated hardware such as Ethernet, RS232, RS422, RS485, I2C, SPI etc.
  • Experience with test hardware such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, logic analyzers, function generators, electronic load banks, power supplies, power analyzers.
  • Experience with FPGA circuitry design and coding in associated VHDL development environments.
  • Experience with cable design.
  • Experience in design and test of analog instrumentation systems.
  • Proficient in MS Office programs, particularly MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Experience working with fabrication shop machinery and tooling.
