About the position

The National Security Specialist (NSS) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) plays a crucial role in enhancing national security through technical expertise and project management support. The NSS will develop and implement training, procedures, and strategies related to the deployment and sustainability of security systems, focusing on nuclear material safeguards and counter-proliferation efforts. This position requires effective communication with various authorities and the ability to navigate complex logistical challenges in both domestic and international contexts.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement training, exercises, procedures, and logistics strategies for security systems.
  • Utilize knowledge of national and international safeguards and security policies to create security strategies.
  • Provide technical contributions and project support for projects related to operational security and nuclear material safeguards.
  • Communicate with federal, state, and local authorities regarding policies and operations.
  • Support the International Nuclear Safeguards Engagement Program (INSEP) by reviewing program materials and maintaining records.
  • Enhance processes and tools for the Nuclear Stockpile Partnership (NSP) Sector Operations team.

Requirements

  • BS/BA and 5 years of relevant experience, or MS/MA and 3 years of relevant experience, or AA and 14 years of relevant experience, or HS/GED and 16 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in national security or radiation detection/protection operations, particularly with the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, or Homeland Security.

Nice-to-haves

  • Cross-cultural communications skills.
  • Experience with the US interagency and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
  • Knowledge of insider threats and nonproliferation efforts.
  • Expertise in Nuclear Material Accounting and Control (NMAC) for IAEA safeguards.
