About the position

The Systems Safety Engineer/Principal Systems Safety Engineer position at Northrop Grumman in Redondo Beach, California, involves ensuring the safety of systems through comprehensive analysis and documentation. The role requires reviewing product designs, establishing safety requirements, and participating in accident investigations. This position is critical in supporting the Strategic Space Systems Division's mission to provide innovative aerospace and defense solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Review product designs, associated support equipment and facilities, functional specifications and operations, and establish safety requirements for assigned systems.
  • Independently analyze and recommend safety criteria in system design, equipment, and procedures to control or eliminate hazards.
  • Develop safety documents as required to support customer and test/operational range requirements.
  • Participate in accident investigations involving damage to products or related facilities and assist in identification of causes and corrective actions.
  • Evaluate the interrelationship of system safety requirements and other aspects of concept design and development requirements to ensure the most cost-effective program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline with 2+ years of Engineering/Systems Safety experience OR Master's degree in STEM discipline.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Govt. DoD Secret Clearance prior to start date.
  • System Engineering background with System Safety experience.
  • For Principal Systems Engineer: Bachelor's degree in STEM with 5+ years of Engineering/Systems Safety experience OR Master's degree with 3+ years OR PhD with 1+ year of Engineering/Systems Safety experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience performing Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SSHA), Test Hazard Analyses (THA).
  • Experience performing Software Safety Hazard Analysis.
  • Experience developing a System Safety Program Plan.
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-882E, AFI 91-202, and OSHA Standards.
  • Experience working on Space or Laser programs.
  • Experience leading a System Safety team/effort.
  • Experience with DoD safety programs highly desired.
  • Experience performing System Safety across all phases of a program.
  • Experience performing Safety on the floor during Integration and Test, Assembly, and moving of hardware.
