About the position

The Tactical Data Network Engineer, Lead position at MITRE involves supporting the implementation of the Universal Command & Control (UC2) language as part of the Integrated Network System of Systems (INSS) capability. This role focuses on enhancing communication and command capabilities within the Department of Defense, particularly in contested electromagnetic environments. The engineer will collaborate with various stakeholders to develop advanced messaging concepts and ensure interoperability across different platforms and systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop advanced tactical data link messaging and cross-platform messaging concepts to analyze operational requirements and address communications challenges.
  • Apply systems engineering, data science, and data modeling techniques to develop a data-centric language and message schema necessary for joint all-domain command and control interoperability.
  • Develop Department of Defense standards for information exchange with an emphasis on tactical edge RF communications.
  • Collaborate with DoD sponsor Working Groups and stakeholders to share knowledge and elicit feedback from subject matter experts.
  • Provide verification and validation methods for establishing the prototype interoperability solution.

Requirements

  • Typically, 8 years of related experience with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, physics, computer engineering, mathematics, or similar field; or 6 years and a master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years' experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with systems engineering across the development lifecycle from concept inception through requirements definition, system development, integration, and verification test.
  • Knowledge and experience with data science principles, data modeling, and schema development.
  • Familiarity with DoD messaging standards such as Link 16, protocols, gateways, and battle management command and control tactics, techniques, and procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills to articulate complex concepts to different audiences.
  • Excellent writing and public speaking/presentation skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with software development tools/environments such as Matlab, Java, JavaScript, Scala, Git, XML, JSON, or XSLT.
  • Familiarity with tactical data networking and data forwarding, network routing and transport protocols, distributed computing, and/or topology management.
  • Active DoD TS/SCI clearance.
