About the position

The Tailings Dam Operator Trainee position at Freeport-McMoRan involves assisting in the operation and maintenance of tailings compoundments. Trainees will learn essential skills related to valve operations, pressure control, and routine inspections, while also operating various mobile equipment and performing maintenance tasks.

Responsibilities

• Perform duties related to the operation and maintenance of tailings compoundments.
• Assist with and perform minor repairs on valves, spickets, and pressure systems.
• Assist with and perform drain valve replacements and plugging and patching leaks.
• Have knowledge of mantling and dismantling spickets on tailing lines.
• Understand proper lock-out procedures of tailings line to perform valve replacements.
• Control pressure of slurry into tailings dam and change pressure on main tailings line.
• Assist with and perform routine inspections of dams and complete required documentation.
• Monitor and set flow rates into correct lines for algae pond process.
• Communicate with thickener operator on flows to tailings dam.
• Learn the monitoring system on tailings line and assist in performing adjustments as necessary.
• Operate mobile equipment such as bulldozers, loaders, water trucks, and other machinery.
• Assist with maintenance activities and perform area housekeeping.
• Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

• Three (3) months experience in mining, manufacturing, industrial operations, commercial construction, commercial landscaping, or commercial agriculture.
• Completion of academic and practical competencies required for the position.
• Ability to apply knowledge and skills while passing a written assessment based on skills/abilities and safety.
