The 1st Assistant Engineer shall be responsible to the Chief Engineer for the duties as allocated accordingly. The 1st Assistant Engineer may be employed in watchkeeping, UMS duties, or day work roles, as required by the Chief Engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Compliance with the Company's MS requirements related to the position
  • Management and supervision of the Engineering Department and delegation of responsibility to other Engineers
  • Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of all machinery in the Engineering Department
  • Maintenance of the waste incinerator equipment
  • Allocation of all maintenance work to respective engineers and ratings
  • Safe keeping of engine room watch as delegated by the Chief Engineer
  • Acting on behalf of the Chief Engineer during periods of absence or incapacitation
  • Presence in the Engine Control Room or other engine room spaces as detailed in the MS and directed by the Chief Engineer
  • Bringing any defects in equipment to the attention of the Chief Engineer immediately
  • Protection against loss or damage and against irregular or wasteful practices on the part of any member of the Engineering Department
  • Preparation and maintenance of the overtime records of Engineering Department personnel
  • Assistance to the Chief Engineer with the maintenance of the computerized Planned Maintenance system
  • Preparation of requisitions for Engineering Department stores and spare parts to be submitted to the Chief Engineer for approval
  • Maintaining an inventory of materials on hand and on order
  • Familiarity with all control piping systems, valves, and electrical systems for emergency situations
  • Monitoring lube oil quantities and condition
  • Assistance to the Chief Engineer with bunkering and transfer of bunkers when required
  • Maintenance, testing and efficient operation of fire-fighting and life-saving equipment assigned to the Engineering Department as per the PM schedule
