About the position

The Tax Accountant position at Raymond James involves utilizing specialized knowledge and skills in tax accounting and preparation to ensure compliance with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and state regulations. Under general supervision, the accountant will conduct research on tax ramifications of various financial transactions and assist with both internal and external audit requests. The role requires extensive interaction with internal and external customers, providing additional accounting support to the treasury and billing departments of RJ Affordable Housing Investments. The position is hybrid, meaning it allows for a combination of in-office and remote work, but it is not open to full remote work. The essential duties include reviewing partnership returns, corresponding with CPAs for corrections, and researching applicable IRS and state regulations. The accountant will prepare and review work papers, calculations, and forms related to federal and state tax compliance, including consolidated and combined returns. Responsibilities also include analyzing state apportionment and allocation work papers, responding to notices from various jurisdictions, and leading projects of significant scope and complexity. The accountant will utilize tax software to assist in the completion of state K-1s and tax trial balances, and will be responsible for collecting data for various reports and billing documents. In addition to technical skills, the role requires strong organizational and time management abilities to prioritize workload and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. The accountant will need to communicate effectively with all organizational levels and provide high levels of customer service to both internal and external clients. The position is designed for individuals who can work independently while also collaborating with other functional areas to achieve objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews partnership returns and corresponds with CPA's on requested corrections.
  • Researches and implements applicable IRS and state regulations and interpretations.
  • Research tax ramifications of moderately complex transactions.
  • Conducts research and ensures compliance with IRS and state regulations.
  • Prepares and reviews work papers, calculations, and forms with respect to Federal and state tax compliance.
  • Reviews Federal and state income tax returns, including consolidated/combined returns.
  • Reviews and analyzes state apportionment and allocation work papers.
  • Reviews annual tax return extensions and quarterly estimated payment calculations.
  • Responds to notices from Federal, state, and local jurisdictions.
  • Responsible for making moderately complex decisions.
  • Has regular contact with internal and external clients and/or CPA's.
  • Updates prior year tax work papers.
  • Utilizes tax software to assist in completion of state K-1's and tax trial balances.
  • Research issues with property level tax returns.
  • Leads projects of significant scope and complexity.
  • Collects data for preparation of various reports, billings, and variance analyses.
  • Compiles data for reports and billing documents.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience in preparing and analyzing tax information.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • Knowledge of tax accounting and reporting concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Federal and state tax return filing requirements and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of state apportionment and sourcing concepts.
  • Utilization of the CCH Axcess Tax and Engagement Software or comparable platform.
  • Knowledge of Partnership Taxation and Form 1065.
  • Skill in tax compliance, tax management and planning.
  • Skill in researching and interpreting Federal and state tax requirements.
  • Skill in preparing for tax audits.
  • Skill in communicating tax rules and regulations to others.
  • Skill in reviewing and interpreting financial statements.
  • Skill in gathering, compiling and analyzing large amounts of complex data.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and apply complex IRS and state rules, regulations and requirements.
  • Ability to identify and resolve tax issues.
  • Ability to identify, recommend and implement process improvements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with tax software such as CCH Axcess Tax and Engagement Software.
  • Familiarity with legal ownership structures, operating agreements, and partnership agreements.
