About the position

The Tax Accountant I position at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, Inc. (MHIA) is a hybrid role based in Houston, TX, focused on ensuring compliance with federal and state tax reporting requirements. The role involves active participation in the corporate tax department, supporting tax audits, and accounting during the quarterly close process. The Tax Accountant will report to the Tax Manager and will be responsible for various tax compliance and accounting tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparation of tax information for federal corporate income tax returns.
  • Assist with the preparation of State returns, including apportionment data for state income and franchise tax returns.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual Tax Basis Balance Sheet.
  • Assist in the quarter-end and year-end tax accounting reporting process.
  • Oversee workpaper preparation of all state and local income and franchise tax returns (stand-alone, combined, and unitary).
  • Prepare and review tax depreciation calculation and fixed asset reconciliation for provision.
  • Manage Fixed Asset register for Accounting and Tax Compliance and related processes.
  • Assist with 1099 Reporting.
  • Assist with Form 1042 and FBAR Reporting.
  • Ensure proper application of ASC 740 and other tax accounting pronouncements, including those related to uncertain tax positions.
  • Review quarterly tax provisions, reconcile current and deferred taxes, and complete schedules for year-end audited statements.
  • Participate in tax audits, assisting with the gathering of information and research of tax issues.
  • Assist with other projects as necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 2 years of Tax Compliance experience in Corporate Income tax (Federal and state).
  • Working knowledge of tax regulations and US GAAP accounting principles.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word) with advanced Excel knowledge.
  • Experience with fixed assets and fixed assets software (SAP and/or SAGE) is a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong team player who is able to work well with others and independently.
  • Ability to establish, maintain, and meet deadlines.
  • Self-motivated individual who is dependable and can follow through on all assignments.
  • Strong self-starter with initiative, attention to details and strong organizational skills.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment, with significant competing deadlines.

Nice-to-haves
