About the position

The Tax Accountant - Analytics and Audit position at American Express is designed for an aspiring tax professional eager to develop their skills and advance their career in a dynamic environment. This role is pivotal in assisting with the gathering of data for federal and state audit responses, as well as performing analytical calculations that support the day-to-day operations of the tax team based in New York. The position offers a unique opportunity to engage with various aspects of tax accounting, including the preparation of amended tax returns and the management of the Analytics and Audit calendar of deliverables. In this role, you will be responsible for preparing federal and state amended tax returns following the completion of federal audits, managing income tax notices, and processing all audit tax payments and refunds. You will also liaise with third-party service providers for annual reports and personal property tax filings, ensuring compliance with tax regulations. The position requires a proactive approach to analyzing new legislation and assessing its impact on the company, ensuring that all changes are accurately reflected in the US tax returns. As part of the Tax Analytics and Audit team, you will have the chance to attend federal and state audit meetings, take notes, and support ad hoc projects across Global Tax. This role is ideal for individuals who are detail-oriented, possess strong analytical skills, and are committed to quality and accuracy in their work. Responsibilities

  • Gather information for document requests from federal and state tax authorities.
  • Prepare federal and state amended tax returns based on the completion of federal audits.
  • Manage the Analytics and Audit calendar of deliverables.
  • Support the Tax Analytics and Audit team in analyzing new legislation and assessing its impact on the company.
  • Prepare non-income tax reserve calculations including sales and use tax reserves for quarterly meetings.
  • Manage income tax notices and tracker.
  • Process, report, and reconcile all audit tax payments and refunds.
  • Liaise with third-party service providers for AmEx annual report and Personal Property tax filings.
  • Assist with entity tax classification applications.
  • Review and redistribute incoming tax electronic correspondence to appropriate internal parties.
  • Liaise with tax authority representatives regarding information reporting-related notices.
  • Obtain tax return transcripts and reconcile transcripts against tax returns.
  • Attend federal and state audit meetings with external auditors and take notes as required.
  • Assist in ad hoc project support as required across Global Tax.

Requirements

  • Entry level position suitable for recent graduates or those new to the field.
  • CPA or CPA Track is preferred.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting/Finance is required.
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess and interpret tax-related data.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective collaboration and reporting.
