About the position

The Tax Accountant position at The Container Store is a critical role within the Accounting/Finance department, primarily responsible for managing outsourced sales and use tax compliance. This includes ensuring the timely filing of various tax payments and returns, preparing journal entries, and conducting account reconciliations. The Tax Accountant will also provide essential support during tax audits and assist with various special projects that may arise. This position requires close collaboration with the Accounting teams to ensure that all tax-related projects are executed efficiently and accurately. In this role, the Tax Accountant will maintain an indirect compliance calendar to track all company filing obligations, ensuring that all deadlines are met. Responsibilities also include preparing and submitting payments for business licenses, annual reports, property taxes, and other miscellaneous filings. The Tax Accountant will be tasked with preparing resale and exemption certificates as needed and will handle correspondence from taxing authorities, responding in a timely manner. Additionally, the role involves researching and staying updated on changes to tax laws and compliance requirements, which is crucial for maintaining the company's adherence to regulations. Responsibilities

  • Assist with the outsourced sales/use tax compliance and prepare monthly journal entry after filings and payments are complete
  • Prepare journal entries for indirect tax accruals, refunds, adjustments, or other required accounting transactions adhering to strict deadlines
  • Reconcile indirect tax general ledger accounts and ensure reconciling items are fully documented and resolved in a timely manner
  • Maintain indirect compliance calendar for all Company filing obligations
  • Timely prepare, file and submit payments for business licenses, annual report filings, property tax and other miscellaneous filings
  • Prepare resale/exemption certificates as requested
  • Assist with handling correspondence from taxing authorities and respond timely
  • Assist with tax audits as required, including requests for data, preparing schedules, gathering work papers and other supporting documentation
  • Research and stay current of changes to tax laws and other compliance related requirements

Requirements

  • College degree required
  • 2-5 years accounting experience required
  • General ledger accounting experience required
  • Sales tax compliance and multistate experience required
  • CPA / CPA candidate a plus
  • Vertex O Sales Tax software experience a plus
  • Strong computer skills: proficiency in Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and knowledge of Excel
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
