About the position

The Tax Compliance Team Lead at the University of California Office of the President is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local employment tax regulations. This role involves preparing and reviewing tax filings, analyzing payroll data, and providing guidance on tax-related issues. The Team Lead will collaborate with various campus locations and departments to maintain accurate records and implement effective tax strategies, while also supporting audits and staying updated on tax law changes.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment tax laws, including payroll taxes and unemployment taxes.
  • Analyze payroll data and tax withholdings to identify discrepancies or areas of improvement.
  • Assist with responses to notices from tax authorities, manage tax audits, and prepare necessary documentation.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for campus locations and UCOP departments to ensure accurate tax reporting and compliance.
  • Stay updated on changes in tax laws and regulations, providing guidance to management and staff as needed.
  • Address and resolve employment tax issues and discrepancies that arise.
  • Use advanced tax and compliance concepts to resolve complex issues and ensure timely completion of tax deposits and returns.
  • Support miscellaneous tax filings such as 1099 and 1042 forms, and manage sales and use tax compliance.
  • Update tax policies related to disbursements, payroll tax, unrelated business income tax, and others as assigned.
  • Guide and support team members, oversee workload distribution, and promote a positive work environment.
  • Maintain relationships with various campus and department stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Minimum 8 years of relevant tax experience involving payroll and tax updates.
  • Advanced knowledge of tax and compliance concepts for complex analysis.
  • Ability to present complex tax information clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to lead less experienced professionals and manage multiple projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of IRS and California State Tax Reporting requirements.
  • Highly skilled in Microsoft Word and Excel.
