About the position

We are seeking a detailed-oriented and organized professional to support the team in handling tax-related disputes and controversies on behalf of individuals and organizations. The primary role of the Tax Controversy Specialist is to navigate complex tax laws, regulations, and procedures to resolve issues between taxpayers and tax authorities. This position plays a vital role in providing essential support to our Tax Controversy and ERC team, ensuring that our clients receive the best possible representation in their tax matters. The role is based in our Long Beach, CA and Las Vegas offices, and requires a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. As a Tax Controversy Specialist, you will be responsible for assisting in all aspects of IRS projects, including audits, appeals, collection, penalty abatement, and tax resolution. You will review and analyze client data, respond to information requests, and prepare required supporting documents, including related filings. Additionally, you will track the statute of limitations, provide technical advice on practice and procedure matters, and communicate regularly with both the IRS and other tax authorities to accurately assess clients' individual and business tax issues. Your strong analytical skills will be essential in conducting tax-related research and diagnosing clients' tax issues. The position also involves mentoring and training team members, managing case files in a productive and organized manner, and performing other duties as needed. Responsibilities

  • Assist in all aspects of IRS projects including audits, appeals, collection, penalty abatement, and tax resolution.
  • Review and analyze client data, respond to information requests, and prepare required supporting documents including related filings.
  • Track statute of limitations and provide technical advice on practice and procedure matters.
  • Communicate with exam team and clients regularly.
  • Communicate with both the IRS and other Tax Authorities to accurately assess client's individual and business tax issues.
  • Prepare written correspondence to clients and Tax Authorities.
  • Manage case files in a productive, efficient, and organized manner.
  • Investigate and diagnose client's individual and/or business tax issues.
  • Mentor and train team members.
  • Perform other duties as needed and assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation required.
  • 2+ years recent public accounting experience required.
  • Prior Tax Controversy experience required.
  • Income tax compliance experience.
  • Experience with IRS, FTB, State and Local Tax and other tax authorities in Audits, Notices, Research, etc.
  • Strong analytical skills to conduct tax-related research.
  • Knowledge of federal and state tax issues.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, programs, and data retrieval.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to meet timely deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to adapt to new software applications.
