The Tax Examining Clerk/Technician position at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) involves reviewing and analyzing taxpayer returns and internal documents, processing individual and small business tax returns, and ensuring accurate account information. The role includes responsibilities such as assigning identification numbers, interpreting taxpayer information, and serving as a technical advisor or instructor to assist with systemic issues.

Responsibilities

• Review and analyze internal documents and taxpayer returns.
• Prepare coded entries to amend and complete records.
• Refer questionable returns and documents to appropriate areas for corrective action.
• Process individual or small business returns and cases involving relationships among different accounts across tax periods.
• Assign Employee Identification Numbers (EIN) and temporary Social Security Numbers (SSN).
• Request and interpret taxpayer information.
• Perfect documents and initiate research to correct missing or inaccurate account information.
• Compile and maintain functional and assigned area records or reports to provide status of work.
• Serve as a technical advisor, on-the-job coach, classroom instructor, or reviewer to provide technical assistance on systemic problems and inconsistencies in the Internal Revenue Manuals (IRM).
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Ability to review and analyze tax documents and returns.
• Experience in processing tax returns and understanding tax regulations.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in handling taxpayer information.
• Ability to communicate effectively with taxpayers and colleagues.
