About the position

The Tax Examining Technician position at the Department of the Treasury involves resolving complex tax examination cases, including regular and special handling cases. The role requires a thorough understanding of tax laws and the ability to process audits, determine case priorities, and reconcile tax returns with examination reports. This position is critical in ensuring compliance with the Internal Revenue Code and involves a significant amount of analytical work to address taxpayer inquiries and issues.

Responsibilities

• Resolve difficult and complex issues for examination cases, including regular and special handling cases.
• Process special handling audits and determine if cases require priority handling.
• Compare audit agreements with returns, amended returns, and examination reports to verify tax deficiencies or overassessments.
• Obtain missing information and retract adjustments to previous tax assessments as necessary.
• Examine cases for expiration of statutes and verify office or service center statuses for correctness.
• Reconcile all tax returns with examination reports to determine the existence of carry-backs and the applicability of the Internal Revenue Code.

Requirements

• One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service, including experience working with individual and/or business accounts and applying tax laws and regulations.
• Familiarity with online systems such as PCS, TEFRA, and RGS, as well as research materials and technology to resolve taxpayer inquiries.
• Must meet Time in Grade (TIG) requirements for positions above GS-05.

Nice-to-haves
