About the position

The Tax Examining Technician (Complex Restricted Interest Examiner) position at the Internal Revenue Service involves researching and analyzing complex interest calculation issues related to tax, penalties, and interest. The role requires a high level of technical expertise to resolve intricate cases and provide guidance to other offices and taxpayers.

Responsibilities

• Research and analyze cases to determine the scope and nature of complex interest calculation issues.
• Resolve complex interest calculations, including the net rate interest netting process of overlapping periods of debit and credit interest.
• Reconstruct data and analyze conditions and complicating factors to compute complex interest calculations.
• Prepare documentation for adjustments and credit transfers, incorporating computations to resolve case issues.
• Serve as a technical advisor to other functional offices, taxpayers, and representatives on complex interest calculation matters.

Requirements

• One year of specialized experience at a level equivalent to GS-08 in the Federal service, specifically in calculating restricted interest on complex cases.
• Experience using automated computation tools for manual interest computation.
• Experience in transcript analysis and resolving complex interest issues related to various tax returns and claims.
• Knowledge of Internal Revenue Code, regulations, and court decisions to protect statutes and resolve taxpayer accounts.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in a tax-related role within the public or private sector.
