The Tax Examining Technician (Complex/Restricted Interest Examiner) position at the Department of the Treasury involves resolving complex tax cases related to interest calculations. This position is critical in addressing previously unsatisfied tax cases and involves significant analytical work to compute complex interest calculations.

Responsibilities

• Resolve a full range of previously unsatisfied tax cases on all types of tax accounts through examination and computation of complex interest calculations.
• Research and analyze each case to determine the scope and nature of complex interest calculation issues.
• Analyze data consistent with applicable tax laws and regulations to resolve difficult and complex issues/problems.
• Research or reconstruct data to compute complex interest calculations, including overlapping periods of debit and credit interest.
• Prepare appropriate documentation for adjustments, credit transfers, and other necessary actions to resolve case issues.

Requirements

• One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service, including experience working with tax returns and related records.
• Experience calculating full and part year tax liabilities, computing penalties and interest, and preparing adjustments and documents to resolve taxpayer accounts.
• Knowledge of Privacy Act and disclosure procedures related to taxpayer information.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with tax reporting schedules and allowable deductions.
• Familiarity with the IRS telework eligibility requirements.
