About the position

The Tax Examining Technician (Tax Examining Assistant) position at the Department of the Treasury involves analyzing and resolving tax processing problems, reconstructing tax records, and determining tax liabilities or refund entitlements. This role requires a strong understanding of tax laws and the ability to provide technical assistance on systemic issues. The position is permanent, full-time, and offers opportunities for telework as determined by agency policy.

Responsibilities

• Analyze and resolve tax processing problems using research methods beyond information submitted by the taxpayer.
• Manually reconstruct and compile tax records to determine tax liability or refund entitlement.
• Identify, accept, or reject claims based on tax law and case actions.
• Adjust current and prior year tax accounts involving complex account interrelationships or codes.
• Calculate taxes, penalties, and interest as required.
• Identify gaps in internal procedures and processing methods.
• Serve as a technical advisor, OJT coach, classroom instructor, or reviewer; provide technical assistance on systemic problems.

Requirements

• One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service, including experience with relevant tax laws and regulations.
• Experience identifying the nature and scope of tax-related problems and advising taxpayers on options available for meeting tax obligations.
• Familiarity with online systems, research materials, technology, and tools to resolve taxpayer inquiries.
