About the position

As a Tax Senior Manager in the Accounting Methods and Periods (AMP) team at RSM, you will play a pivotal role in providing tax consulting and advisory services that focus on the timing of recognizing revenue, expenses, capitalization, cost recovery, and inventory accounting. Your responsibilities will encompass a wide range of services, including accounting method reviews, filing of accounting method or period changes, and participating in M&A structuring and diligence. You will be expected to write technical advice memorandums, research technical filing positions, and engage with both internal tax professionals and external client stakeholders to ensure compliance and optimization of tax strategies. In this role, you will lead the identification, oversight, and technical review of AMP projects, supported by specialists from the Washington National Tax office. This includes managing projects related to revenue and expense recognition, inventory accounting, and the implications of transactions on accounting methods. You will oversee the delivery of AMP projects, which typically involve automatic or advanced consent changes, and manage a team of 2-5 professionals. Your expertise in financial accounting standards (GAAP and IFRS) will be crucial as you research and review tax advice and technical memoranda in collaboration with the WNT team. Additionally, you will be responsible for initiating and developing service offerings, staying updated on industry regulations, and maintaining your professional competency through continuing education and certifications. Building relationships across teams and identifying service areas in collaboration with RSM's Growth Acceleration Teams will be essential for pursuing AMP services for existing and prospective clients. You will also have the opportunity to train, mentor, and develop RSM professionals, fostering a culture of growth and excellence within the firm.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tax consulting and advisory services around revenue and expense recognition, capitalization, cost recovery, and inventory accounting.
  • Conduct accounting method reviews and file accounting method or period changes.
  • Participate in M&A structuring and diligence activities.
  • Write technical advice memorandums and research technical filing positions.
  • Engage with internal tax professionals and external client stakeholders to ensure compliance and optimization of tax strategies.
  • Identify, oversee, and technically review AMP projects, including revenue recognition and expense recognition.
  • Manage the delivery of AMP projects, including 481(a) adjustments and IRS exam support, while leading a team of 2-5 professionals.
  • Research and review tax advice, opinion, and position memorandums in conjunction with WNT team members.
  • Review technical memoranda, legal basis disclosures, and responses to IRS inquiries.
  • Initiate and develop service offering ideas in conjunction with WNT.
  • Stay abreast of changes in industry regulation and maintain competency through continuing education and certifications.
  • Identify and pursue AMP services for existing and prospective clients, collaborating with RSM's Growth Acceleration Teams.
  • Build cross-team relationships and identify service areas in conjunction with RSM's Enterprise Account Leaders.
  • Train, mentor, and develop RSM professionals from intern level up.

Requirements

  • Minimum B.A. or B.S. degree or equivalent from an accredited university.
  • CPA or JD required.
  • 8+ years of experience in public accounting with a proven track record of practice building and project management.
  • Strong understanding of tax services for middle-market business clients.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to articulate complex information.
  • Ability to travel to client sites, which may include overnight accommodations - up to 25% of the time.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate among team, client service teams, and client teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Masters in Accounting, Tax, or other related field; MBA, JD/LLM preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience working with tax accounting methods and inventory.
  • Experience working for a national accounting firm in a specialized practice area.
