About the position

The Tax Specialist 2 position at the State of Louisiana involves performing in-house audits of various tax returns and managing taxpayer accounts. This role is essential for ensuring compliance with state tax laws and providing assistance to taxpayers regarding their tax obligations. The position offers a hybrid work environment and requires a combination of accounting knowledge and administrative experience.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure payments are properly applied to taxpayer accounts.
  • Reconcile bank statements with payments received in the portal.
  • Authorize or recommend issuance of any refund or credit due.
  • Review penalty waiver requests and make determinations or recommendations.
  • Educate taxpayers regarding return and payment processing and management.
  • Review applications submitted by businesses to determine eligibility to file as a remote seller.
  • Open and close taxpayer accounts, generating all correspondence pertaining to new/closed accounts.
  • Verify account closings by reviewing taxpayer history to determine if there are outstanding balances due prior to closing an account.
  • Report any outstanding balances to Executive Director prior to closing account.
  • Assist with the collection of delinquent accounts.
  • Provide assistance to taxpayers with applications, filing of returns, payment of taxes, and general questions.
  • Educate taxpayers regarding compliance with state statutes and local tax ordinances.
  • Develop, analyze internal processes and recommend and implement procedural or manual changes.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree with six semester hours in accounting, business, economics, finance, management, information systems management, or quantitative methods.
  • One year of professional level experience in accounting, administrative services, financial auditing, management analysis, tax accounting, tax audit review, tax auditing, tax collection, tax enforcement, tax law, tax systems work, or taxpayer assistance.
  • Possession of a master's degree can substitute for one year of required experience.
  • Possession of designation as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) can substitute for one year of required experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in tax auditing or tax law enforcement.
  • Familiarity with state and local tax ordinances.
