About the position

The Teacher 1 (Career-Tech - Building Maintenance) position at the Warren Correctional Institution focuses on providing education and training in building maintenance skills to inmates. The role involves developing lesson plans, assessing educational needs, and delivering instruction in various trades such as plumbing, electrical work, and carpentry. The teacher will also maintain discipline, counsel students, and prepare necessary records and reports, all while contributing to the mission of reducing recidivism through education.

Responsibilities

• Provide instruction in basic fundamentals of building maintenance including plumbing, electrical, masonry, carpentry, roofing, and drywall repair.
• Assess educational needs of inmates and develop lesson plans to address those needs.
• Administer, score, and interpret examinations and proficiency indicators.
• Maintain discipline and security within the classroom environment.
• Counsel students regarding their performance, behavior, and personal issues.
• Prepare required records and reports such as enrollment, grades, and student progress.
• Inventory and order supplies and materials needed for instruction.
• Research, select, and recommend new teaching materials.
• Attend in-service training sessions and workshops for professional development.

Requirements

• Must meet eligibility requirements for Teacher Certificate/License appropriate for career-tech - building maintenance & grade level as assigned.
• Must have a baccalaureate degree or less per OEA agreement.
• Must successfully obtain Teacher Certificate or License prior to employment.
• Preferred: License to teach Flooring from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.
• At least five years of experience in the flooring trade or equivalent training or certification in the flooring trades.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in teaching or training in a correctional environment.
• Additional certifications in building maintenance or related fields.
