About the position

The Art Teacher position at Haywood County Schools is designed to foster students' interest and skills in artistic expression and creativity within the visual arts. The teacher will implement a district-approved curriculum that emphasizes aesthetic understanding and appreciation. This role involves developing lesson plans, documenting teaching and student progress, and providing a safe and optimal learning environment. The teacher will also be responsible for providing feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress and expectations. In this position, the teacher will develop and administer the school art curriculum in alignment with the school district's goals and objectives. They will create instructional materials and translate lesson plans into engaging learning experiences, ensuring that the available time for art instruction is utilized effectively. The teacher will instruct students in various art forms, including crafts, drawing, painting, design, and art history, while also conducting ongoing assessments of student skills and learning. This includes modifying instructional methods to accommodate individual student needs, particularly for those with special needs. The Art Teacher will demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing and painting, using both standard and teacher-prepared instructional aids. They will organize class time to provide a balanced program of instruction and ensure that students learn the proper care and use of tools and equipment used in art classes. Evaluating each pupil's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understanding is crucial, as is preparing progress reports and planning art displays to showcase students' work. Additionally, the teacher will continue to acquire professional knowledge through seminars and workshops, maintain accurate records for student activities, and encourage parental involvement in students' education. They will also coordinate with other school staff and participate in faculty meetings. The role may involve selecting and requisitioning appropriate art materials and maintaining inventory records. Other related tasks may be assigned by the Principal or other administrators as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and administer school art curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, translating them into learning experiences.
  • Teach knowledge and skills in various art forms to secondary pupils, following the course of study adopted by the Board of Education.
  • Provide instruction to develop aesthetic concepts and appreciation in students.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student skills and learning, modifying instructional methods as needed.
  • Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and modeling.
  • Organize class time to provide a balanced program of instruction and working time.
  • Instruct pupils in the proper care and use of tools and equipment used in art classes.
  • Evaluate each pupil's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understanding, preparing progress reports.
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions to showcase pupils' work.
  • Continue professional development by attending seminars, workshops, or conducting research.
  • Maintain accurate record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities and attendance.
  • Encourage parental involvement and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Coordinate with other school staff and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Select and requisition appropriate art materials and maintain inventory records.

Requirements

  • NC Licensure Area: (810) Art K-12
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level and/or subject is a plus.

Nice-to-haves
