About the position

The Art Teacher position at Mobile County Public Schools is designed for individuals who are passionate about teaching visual arts to students. The teacher will be responsible for providing instruction in various art forms, including crafts, drawing, painting, and design, while fostering a creative and engaging learning environment. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of art education and the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and faculty. The teacher will utilize a variety of media and techniques to help students express their ideas and emotions through visual art, while also encouraging participation in local, state, and national art exhibits and contests. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the Art Teacher will collaborate with other faculty members to integrate art into the broader curriculum and support students with special needs. The position involves planning and developing lesson plans, maintaining an organized classroom, and ensuring a safe and productive learning environment. The teacher will also be expected to participate in school-wide activities, maintain communication with stakeholders regarding student progress, and engage in professional development to enhance teaching skills. The Art Teacher will report to the Principal or Fine Arts Supervisor and will be evaluated annually based on performance. This position may require flexibility in work assignments, as it can be itinerant, rotating among multiple schools. The work schedule typically follows a 9-month academic calendar, with daily hours determined by school administration.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction in visual arts using various media and techniques.
  • Assist with the planning and development of art exhibits and fairs.
  • Encourage student participation in local, state, and national art contests.
  • Teach knowledge and skills in art, including crafts, drawing, and design.
  • Maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment for effective learning.
  • Supervise students during class and in common areas to ensure safety.
  • Provide appropriate instruction for students with special needs.
  • Communicate student progress to parents and stakeholders effectively.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that align with educational standards.
  • Integrate technology into instruction and classroom management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Art, Visual Art, or a closely related field with a minimum 2.0 GPA.
  • Valid Alabama teaching certificate or eligibility for an Alternative Certificate.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use educational software.
  • Ability to maintain punctuality and regular attendance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with online course development and facilitation.
  • Familiarity with art history and contemporary art practices.
  • Skills in behavior management and conflict resolution.
