About the position

The Art Teacher position at San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District (SMCISD) is responsible for providing students with engaging art learning activities that foster their intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. The role involves developing motor skills, enabling students to function successfully in society, and creating a positive learning environment that encourages artistic expression and appreciation.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement instruction to ensure that all students master the broad categories of the visual and performing arts.
  • Develop and implement plans for the art curriculum and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodation for individual student differences.
  • Present the subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect accommodation for individual needs of students assigned.
  • Communicate and promote expectations for high level performance from students and recognize excellence in achievement.
  • Develop instructional activities, which incorporate appropriate student learning styles to meet student needs.
  • Provide a variety of learning experiences that allow students to demonstrate skills and concepts through displays, portfolios, and a variety of communication mediums.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established by Individual Education Plans.
  • Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and community in a positive manner.
  • Collaborate with campus teams, the SMCISD Visual Arts team, and vertical alignment teams.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for instructional assistants, and/or volunteers.
  • Use technologies in the teaching/learning process as available and appropriate.
  • Consistently assess student achievement through formal and informal testing and provide progress and interim reports as needed and required.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned, i.e. art clubs.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the physical, social, emotional, and artistic development of students.
  • Manage student behavior and administer discipline according to board policies, administrative regulations, and the IEP.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials as requested.
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Participate in campus and district staff development program.
  • Maintain and improve professional competence through attendance at workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced courses.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university.
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate, with required endorsements for subject/level assigned.
  • Certification in the Visual Arts (Preferred).
  • ESL Certification required within six months of employment.
  • At least one year of student teaching or approved internship.
  • Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills.
