About the position

The Teacher Assistant/Bus Driver OCS Job Coach position at Catawba County Schools involves a dual role that supports both educational and transportation needs within the Catawba Rosenwald Education Center. As a Teacher Assistant, the individual will work under the limited supervision of a teacher and/or principal, providing essential support in the instruction of students. This includes giving group and individualized instruction, monitoring student progress, and preparing instructional materials. The Teacher Assistant will also be responsible for maintaining a positive learning environment, supervising students, and reporting on student behavior and progress to the teacher. The role requires a proactive approach to fostering student self-esteem and promoting citizenship and social skills among students. In the capacity of a Bus Driver, the individual will be responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, adhering to traffic regulations, and ensuring the safety and well-being of students while on the bus. This includes monitoring student behavior, resolving conflicts, and reporting any incidents to school authorities. The Bus Driver must maintain the cleanliness of the bus and perform pre-checks to ensure the vehicle is in good working condition. The position demands a high level of responsibility for the safe transportation of students, making it crucial for the individual to be attentive and vigilant at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Provides group instruction as prescribed by the teacher.
  • Delivers individualized instruction to students.
  • Monitors and checks students' work while in progress.
  • Keeps students on task and praises their achievements.
  • Records student behavior and files data according to regulatory requirements.
  • Supervises students in the classroom and other locations.
  • Drives the bus safely to designated destinations and returns.
  • Monitors students' behavior while they are riding on the bus.
  • Reports discipline problems to the teacher or principal.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the bus and performs vehicle pre-checks.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma with a minimum of 48 hours of college-level coursework or WorkKeys Certification.
  • Two years of experience working with children preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Willingness to undergo further training as required.
  • Experience using a computer.
  • Completion of the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles Bus Driver Training Course.
  • Must be able to pass the required DOT Physical examination and have a DOT Drug Screen with negative results.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in a foreign language, preferably Spanish.
  • Experience in a school environment or with children with special needs.
