About the position

The Teacher Assistant for Exceptional Student Education (ESE) at the School District of Desoto County is responsible for providing instructional and technical assistance to meet the specialized needs of students with disabilities. This role involves supporting teachers in implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs), preparing instructional materials, and ensuring a conducive learning environment for students with diverse needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the teacher in preparing materials, teaching aids, and equipment for instructional activities.
  • Schedule space for specialized instructional programs and coordinate the arrangement of equipment and activity areas.
  • Examine unit plans prepared by the teacher and anticipate the need for specific supplies and materials.
  • Assist in modifying the curriculum to align with students' IEPs.
  • Confer with the teacher on student progress and provide accommodations as needed.
  • Provide one-on-one support to students when necessary.
  • Serve as a substitute teacher when required.
  • Assist in monitoring IEP goals for students with disabilities.
  • Provide supervision to students during various school activities.
  • Assist in maintaining the security of records, materials, and equipment.
  • Assist in assessing student progress and evaluating program effectiveness.
  • Lead small group activities as planned by the teacher.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene and health issues if required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of study at an institution of higher education (minimum of 60 credit hours) or an Associate's degree or higher.
  • Knowledge of techniques and procedures for working with students with disabilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, teachers, and parents.
  • Ability to plan and implement instructional activities.
  • Physical ability to lift students if required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in special education settings.
  • Familiarity with technology and equipment used in educational settings.
