About the position

The Teacher Assistant II-General Education position at Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools is designed to support teachers in their instructional efforts within an elementary school setting. This role is crucial in providing additional time for direct instruction by the teacher and reinforcing learning through various activities. The assistant will work closely with students, helping them develop essential skills through the use of instructional materials and activities that have been previously introduced by the teacher. The position requires a cooperative and supportive approach to education, ensuring that students receive the guidance they need to succeed academically. In this role, the Teacher Assistant will assist in skills practice and reinforcement activities, either individually or in small groups. This includes helping students with flashcards, learning games, worksheets, and other instructional aids. The assistant will also be responsible for maintaining accurate student records, supervising students during transitions, and encouraging them to complete their learning assignments. A significant part of the job involves creating a safe and attractive learning environment, which includes preparing and maintaining bulletin boards and organizing instructional materials. The Teacher Assistant will perform various clerical duties, such as operating technology, photocopying, and laminating instructional materials. They will also provide input to the teacher in planning daily and long-range programs for students, ensuring that the educational needs of each child are met. Responsibilities

  • Assists in skills practice and reinforcement activities, previously introduced by the teacher, either individually or in small groups.
  • Helps students develop skills through use of flashcards, learning games, practice skills, worksheets, and other instructional aides.
  • Assists with lunch, attendance, and other classroom operation records.
  • Assists in maintaining complete and accurate student records.
  • Supervises and escorts students to and from buses, in study halls, lunch, free time, classrooms, and other areas of the school.
  • Encourages and assists students in completing individual or group learning assignments by reinstructing or reinforcing learning skills.
  • Assists in maintaining an attractive, orderly, and safe learning environment.
  • Assists students in finding and correctly using instructional supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Constructs learning materials and/or games appropriate for specific skills.
  • Distributes and collects material as directed, and assists with the filing and cataloging of materials.
  • Assists in the preparation and maintenance of bulletin boards.
  • Performs clerical duties, including preparing and operating technology, photocopying, laminating, and instructional materials.
  • Provides input to the teacher in planning daily and long-range programs for students.

  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of the teacher.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate through clear and grammatically proper speech, and basic writing and computing skills.
  • Concern for general welfare and education of children; ability to accept and support all children; ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Patience, dependability, interest, punctuality, and ability to follow directions.
  • Teacher Assistant II: completion of a minimum of 48 hours of college credit.
