About the position

The Teacher for Early Head Start at the Harris County Department of Education is responsible for providing children aged 0-3 years with appropriate learning activities and experiences that are designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. This role requires ensuring compliance with all Department policies, division procedures, Head Start Program Performance Standards, Child-Care Licensing Minimum Standards, and other local, state, and federal regulations. The teacher will create a nurturing and engaging instructional environment that promotes positive interactions and supports the developmental needs of young children. In this position, the teacher will be expected to role model a sound knowledge of the program's mission and goals, philosophy, and child growth and development practices. They will screen assigned children within the first 45 days of enrollment and develop and implement lesson plans and individualized goals based on the curriculum. Ongoing assessments will be conducted to support individual instruction, monitor progress, and share information with parents. The teacher will also maintain adequate supervision to ensure the health, welfare, and safety of the children in their care. Additionally, the teacher will conduct semi-annual home visits and parent-teacher conferences to discuss each child's individual progress and solicit parent input on goals for their children. Collaboration with parents, colleagues, and community partners is essential to support HCDE Early Head Start's school readiness goals for children, families, and the community. The teacher will ensure that children's files are complete and accurate while maintaining confidentiality of information. Other duties may be assigned as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or advanced degree in Early Childhood Education or related field with at least 18 credit hours in Early Childhood Education.
  • Associate degree in Early Childhood Education or related field with at least 18 credit hours in Early Childhood Education.
  • Infant Toddler Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or enrolled in a CDA program with coursework completed within 12 months of hire date.
  • Minimum two years of classroom experience working with children ages 0 to 3 in an Early Head Start program or other early childhood education program, or completion of an internship or practicum program.
  • Knowledge and experience in the philosophy and practices of Early Head Start or comparable child development programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and use a variety of software applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
