About the position

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher position at Boston Public Schools is a long-term substitute role aimed at providing specialized instruction to Multilingual Learners. The teacher will collaborate with content teachers and instructional leaders to support English language development and ensure academic success for students. This role emphasizes high expectations for student achievement and the importance of culturally relevant teaching practices.

Responsibilities

  • Provide English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to Multilingual Learners identified as English Learners.
  • Collaborate with content teachers to align instruction and support students' English language development.
  • Communicate with the school's instructional leadership team to ensure ELL students receive necessary language support.
  • Assist with the oversight and delivery of ACCESS administration.
  • Prepare for and assist with organization of ELL student transition meetings.
  • Plan and deliver lessons aligned to WIDA Instructional Standards for varying levels of English proficiency.
  • Demonstrate cultural proficiency and use effective instructional practices.
  • Integrate technology into the classroom as an instructional tool.
  • Assist classroom teachers in administering mandated assessments for English language learners.
  • Attend professional development opportunities to stay current with ELL instruction.

Requirements

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree.
  • Complete state and federal guidelines to be fully licensed and 'Highly Qualified.'
  • Current authorization to work in the United States.
  • Ability to model excellent spoken and written English for students.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience teaching in an urban setting.
  • Hold a valid Massachusetts Teaching License in ESL at the appropriate grade level.
  • Fluency in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, or Somali.
