About the position

The Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is responsible for instructing deaf and hard-of-hearing students in a classroom setting, adapting the regular curriculum to meet the unique needs of these pupils. This role involves developing lesson plans, utilizing specialized equipment, and fostering an inclusive learning environment to support student independence and achievement.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements lesson plans
  • Utilizes technical and specialized equipment for students with hearing loss
  • Prepares lessons that accommodate learning styles
  • Communicates by way of sign/spoken language as appropriate
  • Assists in the selection of instructional materials and equipment
  • Provides training to students or staff to facilitate the child's learning, inclusion, and independence
  • Assesses student learning styles and uses results to plan educational activities
  • Conducts assessments of student progress and achievement using testing methodology
  • Compiles reports, records, and documents as required
  • Participates in IEP meetings with parents, teachers, students, and other School District staff
  • Follows School District policies and procedures

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university preferred
  • Valid state teaching certificate as required by state regulations
  • Knowledge in Sign Language and use of amplification devices for the deaf and hard-of-hearing
  • Experience with deaf and hard-of-hearing students preferred
  • ASL proficiency exam or Certification may be required per state, contract or district
  • Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice
  • Participation and completion of Amergis' Competency program when applicable
  • Current CPR if applicable
  • TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable
  • Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)
  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
  • Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site
  • Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements
  • Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required
  • Computer proficiency required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
