About the position

The Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is responsible for instructing deaf and hard-of-hearing students in a classroom setting, adapting the curriculum to meet their unique needs. This role involves developing lesson plans, utilizing specialized equipment, and fostering an inclusive learning environment to ensure students achieve their educational goals.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements lesson plans
  • Utilizes technical and specialized equipment for students with hearing loss
  • Prepares lessons that accommodate various learning styles
  • Communicates using sign/spoken language as appropriate
  • Assists in the selection of instructional materials and equipment
  • Provides training to students or staff to facilitate learning and independence
  • Assesses student learning styles and plans educational activities accordingly
  • Conducts assessments of student progress and achievement
  • Compiles reports, records, and documents as required
  • Participates in IEP meetings with parents, teachers, and other staff
  • Follows School District policies and procedures

Requirements

  • Degree/Certification in Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH)
  • WV Teacher Credentials
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university preferred
  • Valid state teaching certificate as required by state regulations
  • Knowledge in Sign Language and amplification devices for the deaf and hard-of-hearing
  • Experience with deaf and hard-of-hearing students preferred
  • ASL proficiency exam or Certification may be required
  • Current CPR certification if applicable
  • TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable
  • Current Health certificate as per contract or state regulation
  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
  • Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site
  • Strong communication skills and proficiency in English
  • Computer proficiency required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with deaf and hard-of-hearing students preferred
  • ASL proficiency exam or Certification may be required per state, contract or district
