About the position

The Grade 4 Teacher at West Street School is responsible for creating a flexible and engaging learning environment that fosters personal growth and academic success for elementary students. The role involves developing lesson plans, providing individualized instruction, and maintaining effective communication with students, parents, and staff. The teacher will implement Massachusetts Curriculum Standards and utilize various instructional strategies to meet the diverse needs of students, while also adhering to the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, and science according to Massachusetts Curriculum Standards.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials, providing individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to student needs.
  • Guides the learning process toward achieving established district curriculum goals and communicates clear objectives to students.
  • Uses a variety of instructional strategies, such as inquiry, group discussion, lecture, and discovery.
  • Follows PBIS code of conduct for the classroom and develops fair and just rules of classroom behavior.
  • Evaluates students' academic and social growth and maintains accurate records as required by law and district policy.
  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss students' progress and interpret the school program.
  • Identifies student needs and collaborates with other professional staff members to assess and help students.
  • Creates an effective learning environment through functional displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service professional development activities.
  • Participates cooperatively in fulfilling teacher evaluation procedures with the appropriate administrator.
  • Supervises students in hallways, recess areas, and lunchroom during the school day.
  • Administers group standardized tests in accordance with the state testing program.
  • Attends established traditional school-sponsored activities agreed upon by the building administrator and faculty.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • Hold a valid Massachusetts Teaching License in Elementary 1-6.
  • Hold a valid Massachusetts SEI Endorsement or Grade-level appropriate ESL License.
  • Meet all state and federal guidelines to be fully licensed and Highly Qualified.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in urban, high-poverty, and/or turnaround schools.
  • Major/minor in specific teaching content area.
  • Additional certification in Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities and/or English Language Learners (ESL).
  • Demonstrated experience in English Language Development (ELD) and Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) strategies.
  • Bilingual language proficiency (Spanish/English) strongly preferred.
