About the position

The Teacher HS position at Wayne-metropolitan Community Action Agency focuses on planning and providing educational activities that foster the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of infants and toddlers. The role involves developing individual goals for children, conducting ongoing assessments, and facilitating transitions into educational settings in collaboration with parents.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize the High Scope Curriculum to plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities for infants and toddlers.
  • Coordinate daily lesson planning that incorporates children's individual goals and parent input.
  • Collaborate with teaching partners and program staff to monitor each child's progress using developmental screenings and assessments.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of children through observations and screenings.
  • Ensure the health and safety of children and staff according to agency and regulatory policies.
  • Maintain an engaging classroom environment and promote positive adult/child interactions.
  • Modify activities and environments to meet the changing needs of infants and toddlers.
  • Conduct parent/teacher conferences and home visits as per Head Start Program Performance Standards.
  • Establish positive communication with parents using various methods.
  • Develop curriculum activities reflecting the community's ethnic/multi-cultural makeup.
  • Promote family and community volunteer opportunities and document participation.
  • Assist children with personal care tasks such as diaper changes and feedings.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information related to home and school environments.
  • Provide activities that foster positive self-image and socialization.
  • Conduct inventory of classroom equipment and supplies.
  • Work cooperatively with other program and supervisory staff.
  • Complete and maintain required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Promote parents as their child's first teacher through various activities and training.
  • Encourage family participation in training and meetings.
  • Assist in enrollment and recruitment activities.
  • Participate in employee talent outreach and retention efforts.
  • Assist in generating non-federal match value for the Head Start program.
  • Maintain a positive attitude towards work, clients, and staff.
  • Further professional development through relevant meetings and training.
  • Serve as an advocate for low-income persons in the community.
  • Be willing to make home visits and continue personal and professional growth.

Requirements

  • AA Degree from an accredited college or university in Early Childhood/Child Development education preferred.
  • AA Degree in progress in Early Childhood/Child Development, within one year of completion and/or 18 credit hours.
  • Education coursework must include at least 2 courses in early childhood addressing the infant-toddler age group.
  • Proficiency in a second language is a plus.
  • Experience working with infants/toddlers and families preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid Certified or ability to obtain certification.
  • Proficient knowledge of internet applications and programs including Google technology and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong interpersonal and professional skills including professional appearance, tact, punctuality, and dependability.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to individuals and groups both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors, colleagues, and agency staff.
  • Ability to work with children and families with disabilities.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with parents/caregivers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in a second language is a plus.
  • Experience working with infants/toddlers and families preferred.
