About the position

The Teacher (K-8 Spanish) position at Chicago Public Schools is a vital role under the supervision of the school principal, responsible for the instruction, progress, and discipline of all pupils in assigned classes. The teacher will engage in instructional planning, which includes providing written lesson plans and preparation that align with the objectives of the instructional program. Establishing positive learning expectations for all pupils is crucial, as is evaluating their progress and maintaining accurate records of their achievements. The teacher will implement various instructional methods, applying contemporary principles of learning theory and teaching methodology, and will utilize a range of instructional materials available in the school. Participation in the development and implementation of new teaching techniques is also expected, alongside creating bulletin boards and interest areas that reflect the pupils' current work. In addition to instructional duties, the teacher will participate in programs aimed at improving student attendance and promoting anti-vandalism initiatives within the school. Establishing and maintaining reasonable rules of conduct in the classroom and on school grounds is essential, in accordance with the Chicago Public Schools' Uniform Discipline Code. The teacher will maintain accurate attendance records and seating charts, encourage student growth in self-discipline and positive self-concept, and ensure fairness in teacher-pupil relationships. Communication with parents or guardians regarding the pupil's academic progress, attendance, and conduct is a key responsibility, as is initiating appropriate conferences with parents, guardians, administrators, and ancillary personnel. The teacher will also participate in in-service meetings and professional staff meetings, utilizing pertinent information and materials provided. There may be opportunities to coordinate and attend class field trips and to work in extra-curricular and after-school activities. The role requires the utilization of appropriate community resources to enhance the educational experience of the students.

Responsibilities

  • Exhibit and apply knowledge of the curriculum content related to subject areas and instructional level.
  • Participate in programs to improve student attendance and promote anti-vandalism programs in the schools.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of all student teaching requirements and all course work required to obtain the appropriate teaching certificate(s) issued by the Illinois State Board of Education.
  • Possession of at least one valid teaching license issued by the Illinois State Board of Education: Professional Educator License (PEL) or Educator License with Stipulations (ELS), properly endorsed for this position.
  • Knowledge of subject matter consistent with state certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of contemporary principles and practices of teaching and classroom management techniques.
  • Ability to modify instruction to meet student needs and cooperate with school faculty and administration in developing and implementing an articulated program of instruction.
  • Ability to work effectively with pupils, parents, guardians, staff members, and community representatives.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills.
