About the position

The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) is seeking dedicated and passionate individuals to join our Special Education team as Teachers specializing in Mild/Moderate disabilities within the Division of Alternative Education. This role is crucial in providing direct instruction to students with special needs, ensuring they receive the support necessary to thrive academically and socially. As a Teacher specializing in Mild/Moderate disabilities, you will be responsible for developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to each student's unique needs. You will provide specialized instruction across various skill areas, including academic, communication, self-help, social-emotional, and vocational skills. Your role will also involve creating and delivering engaging lessons, assessing student work, and monitoring progress to ensure that each student is on the path to success. In addition to classroom instruction, you will accompany and supervise students on community-based instructional outings, work programs, and field trips, providing them with real-world learning experiences. Maintaining regular communication with parents, caregivers, and external service providers will be essential to support students' educational programs effectively. You will also be responsible for keeping accurate records of student academic performance and behavioral progress, supervising students during non-instructional times, and assisting them with personal hygiene and self-help skills. Managing student behavior through positive strategies and implementing Behavior Intervention Plans will be a key aspect of your role, ensuring a conducive learning environment for all students.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to each student's needs.
  • Provide specialized instruction in academic, communication, self-help, social-emotional, vocational, and other skill areas.
  • Create and deliver lessons, reinforce key concepts, assess student work, and monitor progress.
  • Accompany and supervise students on community-based instructional outings, work programs, and field trips.
  • Maintain regular communication with parents, caregivers, and external service providers to support students' educational programs.
  • Keep accurate records of student academic performance and behavioral progress.
  • Supervise students during non-instructional times, including lunch, recess, and transportation.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene, grooming, and self-help skills, including toileting and dressing.
  • Manage student behavior through positive strategies and implement Behavior Intervention Plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or above from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • A valid California Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in Special Education for students with mild/moderate disabilities.
  • Authorization to provide instruction for ELD and SDAIE to English learners.
  • The selected candidate may be required to complete additional employment clearances, such as probation clearance, as part of the hiring process.
