About the position

Boston Public Schools (BPS) is seeking an exceptional Special Education Math Teacher with a focus on Learning Disabilities and an SEI Endorsement for a long-term substitute position. This role is expected to start on October 28, 2024, and conclude on February 28, 2025. As a per diem substitute, the teacher will begin at the per diem rate of pay, even when placed in long-term assignments. In this role, the teacher will implement district learning goals and objectives in alignment with state frameworks, focusing on identifying access points for student portfolio development. Responsibilities include providing small-group instruction to students with moderate to severe cognitive delays, ensuring their understanding and progress in the general curriculum. The teacher will write and implement goals and objectives consistent with each student's Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and provide regular progress reports on student development. Additionally, the teacher will accommodate student learning and testing needs, develop and implement curriculum as necessary, and prepare students for the MCAS Alternative Assessment. Collaboration with other staff members to support student needs and assistance with transitions to adult living services will also be key components of this position. BPS emphasizes the importance of accountability for student achievement, effective communication of content knowledge, equitable and effective instruction, cultural proficiency, parent/family engagement, and professional reflection and collaboration. Responsibilities

  • Implement district learning goals and objectives in alignment with state frameworks.
  • Provide small-group instruction to students diagnosed with moderate to severe cognitive delays.
  • Write and implement goals and objectives consistent with student Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Provide timely and regular progress reports on student development.
  • Develop and implement curriculum as needed, and prepare students for MCAS Alternative Assessment.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to support student needs for modification.
  • Assist in transitioning students to adult living services as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree.
  • Hold a Massachusetts Teaching License in the appropriate content area and Moderate Disabilities for the appropriate grade level.
  • Hold either an ESL License at the appropriate level or SEI Endorsement.
  • Meet all state and federal guidelines to be fully licensed and Highly Qualified.
  • Ability to meet the Standards of Effective Teaching established by Boston Public Schools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience teaching in urban schools.
  • Degree in Physics and Chemistry in Special Education.
  • Fluency in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, or Somali.
  • Certification in subject area and Moderate Disabilities or English as a Second Language.
