About the position

The Newark Board of Education is seeking a dedicated and qualified individual for the position of Teacher of Bilingual Education, focusing on Mathematics and Science for grades 7 and 8 at South Street School. As a Teacher of Bilingual Education, you will be responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive program of study that meets the diverse needs, interests, and abilities of your students. You will evaluate student progress regularly and prepare detailed progress reports to communicate with parents and staff. Your instruction will encompass citizenship, basic communication skills, and other essential elements of the curriculum as mandated by state law and district regulations. In this role, you will provide individualized instruction, small group sessions, and large group instruction as necessary to adapt the curriculum for students with varying intellectual and special abilities. You will also be responsible for maintaining standards of pupil behavior to ensure a productive classroom environment. Additionally, you will select and requisition instructional materials and equipment, develop instructional plans, and organize class time effectively. Professional development is a key component of this position, and you will be expected to participate in in-service education activities provided by the district, as well as engage in self-selected professional growth opportunities. You will also supervise out-of-classroom activities and coordinate the work of aides and paraprofessionals. Collaboration with other professional staff members to assess and address students' health, attitude, and learning challenges will be essential. This position reports directly to the Principal and is affiliated with the Newark Teacher's Union (NTU).

Responsibilities

  • Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Evaluates student progress on a regular basis and prepares progress reports.
  • Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communications skills, and other general elements of the course of study as specified in state law and district regulations.
  • Provides individual, small, and/or large group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying abilities.
  • Instructs pupils in the proper care and use of textbooks, equipment, and materials.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive environment.
  • Selects and requisitions books, instructional materials, equipment, and maintains required inventory records.
  • Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction.
  • Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education activities and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Supervises out-of-classroom activities for pupils during the assigned working day, as required.
  • Plans and coordinates the work of aides, teacher assistants, and other paraprofessionals.
  • Identifies pupil's needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Communicates with parents and pupil personnel staff members on the individual pupil's progress and development.
  • Maintains attendance accounting and business service as required.
  • Develops and participates in the sponsorship of student activities and faculty committees.
  • Acts as a resource person on an interdepartmental level to relate appropriate aspects of the subject area to other subject areas.
  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning academic and behavioral progress.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • New Jersey Department of Education Standard Certificate, Certificate of Eligibility (CE), or Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS).
  • Certifications must include one in Bilingual/Bicultural Education.
  • Possession of a current and valid teaching certificate in the appropriate subject/content area issued by the New Jersey Department of Education.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
