About the position

The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) provides specialized therapy services to children with significant hearing impairments or who are deaf. This role focuses on delivering quality, school-based intervention services, evaluating children, developing individualized education plans (IEPs), and providing support to families. The DHH Teacher utilizes various communication methods, including American Sign Language (ASL), to enhance the educational experience of students with developmental delays and disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide language and communication instruction to students who are deaf or hard of hearing using methods such as sign language, lip reading, and auditory training.
  • Assess the communication and language needs of each student and develop individualized education plans (IEPs) or 504 plans.
  • Participate as a specialist in determining eligibility for services related to hearing impairment.
  • Support students in the classroom, including interpreting during lectures and facilitating communication with peers and teachers.
  • Assist families of students who are deaf or hard of hearing in learning and using different communication methods.
  • Determine assistive technology needs and provide training for access to specially designed instruction and the general education curriculum.
  • Prepare and implement IEPs or Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP) for identified students.
  • Prepare records and reports for eligibility evaluations and transitions according to program procedures.
  • Monitor programs using observation, data collection, and assessments.
  • Serve as a resource consultant and trainer for educators and parents regarding hearing impairment services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience (4+ years) in a related field.
  • 1 year of directly related experience in a pediatric setting.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or another visual-manual communication system.
  • Knowledge of communication methods such as lip reading and auditory training.
  • Ability to pass background/fingerprint clearance and health screenings.
  • Current CA Board License and valid Driver's License with proof of auto insurance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with children with special needs.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft and Google documents.
