About the position

The Educational Service District is seeking qualified candidates to fill a Teacher of the Deaf position. This position travels to various schools to provide direct and/or consultative special education services relating to loss of hearing. Students range in age from birth to 21; may be singularly or multiply disabled; and may range from severely disabled to gifted. The Teacher of the Deaf will be responsible for designing and implementing individualized education programs (IEPs) for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in deaf education, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for the deaf student. This is an itinerant position serving multiple school districts within the region.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement IEPs tailored to the needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Provide direct instruction in various subjects using appropriate methods and technologies for deaf education.
  • Utilize American Sign Language (ASL) and other communication methods to facilitate learning and communication.
  • Collaborate with other teachers, specialists, and support staff to ensure a cohesive approach to education.
  • Assess and monitor student progress, adjusting instruction as necessary to meet individual goals.
  • Provide support and resources to families and caregivers to enhance student learning at home.
  • Stay current with best practices, research, and developments in the field of deaf education.
  • Advocate for the needs and rights of students who are deaf or hard of hearing within the school and community.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Follow all applicable Board policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Valid teaching certification in Deaf Education.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing in an educational setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team of educators and support staff.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and learning.
  • Empathy, patience, and a passion for supporting the educational needs of students with hearing impairments.
  • WSP/ FBI background clearance required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with assistive technologies and adaptive equipment for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Knowledge of visual and auditory learning strategies.
  • Experience in curriculum development and adaptation for deaf education.
  • Familiarity with the legal and educational rights of students with disabilities.
