About the position

The Maryland School for the Blind is seeking a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to provide specialized Braille instruction and consult with classroom teachers to support students who are blind or have low vision. This role involves coordinating educational programs for students with visual impairments, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, and participating in interdisciplinary team meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Teach visually impaired students with multiple disabilities on an individual and group basis.
  • Instruct in braille, Nemeth Code, braille-based technology, core curriculum, and expanded core.
  • Facilitate and participate in the development, review, and evaluation of individualized educational programs (IEPs).
  • Conduct evaluations and assessments to determine a student's reading medium needs.
  • Provide in-service braille and Nemeth Code training and consultation to MSB staff.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, IEP meetings, and staff meetings as needed.
  • Select, requisition, and manage classroom braille materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Coordinate data collection and recording.
  • Plan and participate in on and off-campus student activities.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of reading, braille, and Nemeth Code instruction for students with visual impairments.
  • Knowledge of instructional techniques using equipment & technology such as Microsoft operating systems, iPads, braille displays, and embossers.
  • Knowledge of special education principles, practices, and procedures, including developing and writing IEPs.
  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree and ability to meet MSDE certification with an endorsement in Vision required.
  • General knowledge of visual impairment, including causes, manifestations, and adaptations.
  • General knowledge of medical disorders such as seizures or restrictions; alternate modes of communication; and orthopedic impairments.
  • General knowledge of core and expanded core curriculum and classroom management.
